If you have a cat, finding loose hair in the house is not difficult. A good cat brush can help solve this problem, but that’s not the only reason to buy a cat brush.
“Regular brushing helps prevent hairballs and tangles that can cause discomfort or health problems,” says Dr. Karling Matejka, DVM, veterinarian and spokesperson for Solid Gold. “It’s important to choose a brush that’s gentle on your cat’s skin and doesn’t cause discomfort or irritation.”
To help you narrow down your choices, we’ve tested 22 cat brushes, including dusters, grooming tools, and boar brushes. Each option was evaluated for ease of use, efficiency, cleaning requirements, quality, and cost.
Of all the options we’ve tested, our favorite cat brush is the FURminator shedder remover. It features an ergonomic handle and strong yet flexible stainless steel teeth that easily loosen and remove excess hair from your cat’s coat while detangling the mat.
The design is very user-friendly and easy to operate. It is the perfect size and shape to cover your pet’s entire body, including large areas and smaller curves and contours. The cats seem to love it too! The baby we tested purred happily and rolled over to clean his belly.
This cat brush removes a lot of hair, so you will have much less hair in your home. It is also very easy to clean thanks to the fur button as the hair falls out instantly. We love this product and have no intention of changing anything about it.
Do you have a budget? Combined with Best Slicker by Hartz Groomer. This cat brush has a durable non-slip handle and medium hard metal bristles with soft rubber tips. It was comfortable to hold in our tests and did a good job of loosening and removing unwanted hair. It also detangles and removes boring things well.
The downside is that this brush is a bit difficult to clean. Unlike other slick tools, it doesn’t have an auto-release button, so you’ll have to manually pull out the stuck bellows. But this effective sub-$10 product is a steal.
If you have a long haired cat at home, use the Pet Republique Hair Removal Kit. The reversible design features longer metal teeth on one side to detangle difficult knots and shorter, finer teeth on the other side to remove loose hair. We found this brush to be durable, comfortable to hold and easy to maneuver. Although it doesn’t remove existing tangles very well, it glides easily over tangle-free cat hair and does a good job of loosening excess hair.
Using a brush creates a static charge that causes loose hair to stick to the comb. This makes it a bit harder to clean, but you can remove all the fur with a little effort. All things considered, this affordable tool is worth the money.
For shorthaired cats, we recommend Furbliss. This silicone hair care tool is well designed and not fragile. Although it doesn’t have a handle, we found it very easy to hold and use. The silicone bristles are much softer than the metal-toothed models, and we can tell how much cats like them by the sound of their purrs.
While this brush cannot untangle knots, it picks up any loose fur that might otherwise come off and end up in the house. After use, your coat will become smoother and shinier. Cleaning is also easy – just wash with soap and water.
Is your cat’s coat prone to matting? Take a Hertzko slicker. This high quality grooming tool has a comfortable rubber handle and stainless steel bristles. It gently but effectively detangles knots and picks up clumps of hair without tugging at the cat’s skin. It is very easy to clean: just press the button to remove the bristles and free the trapped hair.
It should be noted that for some cats it may be too large to penetrate smaller areas. In addition, the bristles are very thin, so they bend easily, which can affect the effect and cause discomfort to the cat. However, we think this product is excellent value for money and definitely worth buying.
Looking for hair removal tools? The Aumuca cat brush is your best choice. The strong, balanced handle is comfortable and easy to hold, and the stainless steel bristles are angled to the perfect angle to penetrate your cat’s undercoat and remove all excess hair. We (and the cats we’ve tested with) also appreciate that the bristles have protective rubber tips to keep them from being less fluffy.
Due to the large brush head, it can be difficult to reach certain areas such as the head, neck and under the feet. But overall it does a great job of removing hair and debris from the undercoat. Cleaning is also made easier by the bristle release button.
Depets makes our favorite smooth brushes. This grooming tool has a comfortable, grippy handle and stainless steel bristles with protective rubber tips. We found it easy to hold and maneuver, and while the larger size makes it difficult to reach all areas, it slips effortlessly through your cat’s fur.
This smoother brush has perfectly positioned bristles that easily loosen and remove unwanted undercoat hair. Cleaning is also no problem. All you need to do is press the button on the back to retract the teeth and release the collected hair. All things considered, we would not hesitate to recommend this product to any cat owner.
The Safari Slicker Brush is the best choice for big cats. This large tool has a solid construction and a comfortable handle. The large head allows you to quickly comb the entire body of the cat, and the stainless steel bristles do an excellent job of depilating and removing loose hair. While there are no protective beads on the tips of the bristles, they didn’t seem to bother the cats we tested.
After using this product, your cat’s coat will become shinier and softer. Thanks to the self-cleaning design, you can toss your hair into the trash at the touch of a button. After all, we believe the price is right.
This set from Kalamanda includes sleek brushes and combs, each with a lightweight yet durable plastic handle and stainless steel teeth. The brush has a large side, so while it’s great for the back and tummy, it’s not ideal for small areas – and may be too big for some cats. However, it effectively removes loose hair, knots and dandruff.
In addition, a comb is a great spare tool for areas where the brush may not be accessible, such as the head, cheeks, and legs. Both tools are easy to clean: the hairs just need to be pulled out of the comb, and the brush is equipped with a “one-touch cleaning” function that instantly releases the hairs at the touch of a button. This cat grooming kit costs less than $15 and is a great deal.
If your cat has sensitive skin, we recommend the Mars Coat King Boar Hair Brush. The natural bristles are very soft but seem to be firmly attached to the wooden spatula. They glide over your cat’s coat, removing unwanted hair from the surface, leaving the coat smooth and very soft.
While brushing is not effective at detangling and epilating, we believe that regular use can help prevent tangles. Since the collected hairs stick to the bristles, they are difficult to pull out with your hands. But it is easily removed with a comb. Under $15, this gentle cat brush is definitely worth buying.
Several types of cat brushes are worth considering, including smooth brushes, soft-bristled brushes, rubber tumblers, combs, and rakes. According to Dr. Matka, the right choice depends on your cat’s coat and what you want to achieve.
Rakes like the FURminator hair removal tool are great for removing hair and untangling knots. Wipes such as Depets self-cleaning wipes are also a great hair remover and are the best choice for removing rugs. Combs are great for cleaning hard to reach areas, while gentle options are best for smoothing and softening.
Cat brushes usually have stainless steel bristles, which are usually very effective at removing hair and detangling it. Like the Aumuca cat brushes, some brushes have protective rubber tips, making them more gentle on your pet’s skin.
You can also find options with boar bristles, such as the Mars Coat King Cat Brush, which resembles a human hair brush and is usually suitable for more sensitive cats.
When buying a cat brush, consider the length of your pet’s coat. “Long-haired cats may need a smoother brush with densely packed bristles that can penetrate thick fur and detangle knots,” says Dr. Matejka. “For short-haired cats, a grooming scraper or mitt is often effective in removing loose hair and promoting healthy skin.”
“Yes, daily brushing of cats is usually acceptable as long as it is done carefully and with the right tools,” says Dr. Matka. According to her, daily brushing prevents the formation of hairballs and tangles. “It also helps distribute natural oils throughout your cat’s coat, keeping it shiny and healthy.”
Dr. Matka added that new cosmetics are best introduced gradually to avoid negative reactions. “If your cat is showing signs of discomfort or stress while brushing, it’s best to reduce the frequency or seek the advice of a professional groomer or veterinarian,” she adds.
According to our tests, the Hertzko self-cleaning smoothing brush is the best tool for detangling matted cat hair. Stainless steel bristles gently yet effectively detangle knots and tangle loose hair. However, any quality smoothing brush should be able to remove haze.
It depends on what they’re trying to achieve, but groomers often use brushes with softer bristles to smooth and add shine to your cat’s coat. If cats have tangles or tangles, they can use a rag or rake to remove them. In the shower, your beautician may use silicone or rubber massage brushes.
We spent a lot of time looking for the best cat brushes on the market and chose 22 to try out for ourselves. All parts of each brush are carefully inspected, including the handle, brush head and bristles.
We then used them to brush the entire body of at least one cat, noting how easy they worked, how well they worked, and how the cat responded to the grooming process. Finally, clean the brushes and write down how long it will take. After two weeks of use, each cat brush is rated for quality, ease of use, effectiveness, ease of cleaning, and value. The person with the highest overall score will appear in this review.

We created the PEOPLE Tested Seal of Approval to help you find the best products for your life. We use a unique methodology to test products in three labs across the country and our network of home testers to determine potency, durability, ease of use and more. Based on the results, we rate and recommend products so you can find the one that suits your needs.
But we don’t stop there: we also regularly review our PEOPLE Tested approved categories, because the best product today may not be the best product tomorrow. By the way, companies can by no means trust our advice: their product must deserve it, honestly and fairly.
