Dog owners are putting tiny masks on their pets due to the coronavirus outbreak. While Hong Kong has reported a “low-grade” infection with the virus in a domestic dog, experts said there is currently no evidence that dogs or cats can transmit the virus to humans. However, the CDC recommends that people with COVID-19 stay away from animals.
“Wearing a mask is not harmful,” Eric Toner, a scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security, told Business Insider. “But it’s not likely to be very effective at preventing it.”
However, Hong Kong officials reported a “weak” infection in one dog. According to the Hong Kong Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, the dog belonged to a coronavirus patient and may have had the virus in its mouth and nose. He reportedly showed no signs of illness.
The disease can spread between people within 6 feet of each other, but the disease is not airborne. It is spread through saliva and mucus.
The sight of an adorable dog sticking its head out of a stroller can brighten up a busy day filled with coronavirus anxiety.
