The American Kennel Club released its 2022 registration statistics and found that the Labrador Retriever has given way to the French Bulldog after three consecutive decades as the most popular breed.
According to a press release, the popularity of the French Bulldog has skyrocketed over the past decade. In 2012, the breed ranked 14th in popularity and rose to 1st place. Ranked 2nd in 2021. Registrations also increased by more than 1,000 percent from 2012 to 2022.
To rank the most popular dog breeds, the American Kennel Club used statistics based on the voluntary registration of approximately 716,500 dog owners.
The ranking does not include mixed breeds or popular “designer” hybrids such as Labradors because the American Kennel Club only recognizes 200 dog breeds.
The French Bulldog is the favorite of celebrities like Reese Witherspoon and Megan T Stallion.
Despite the breed’s growing popularity, the American Kennel Club says it’s important to do research before adopting it.
According to a study published in the 2021 issue of Canine Medicine and Genetics, French Bulldogs are more likely than other breeds to be diagnosed with 20 common diseases such as heat stroke and breathing problems due to their flat muzzle.
The Labrador Retriever is second on the list. Commonly known as a companion dog, this longtime American favorite can be trained as a guide or assistance dog.
The top three breed is the Golden Retriever. According to the American Kennel Club, this is a good breed that can serve as a guide for the blind and enjoy obedience and other competitive activities.
